Thanks to @ninametz.bsky.social for bringing more attention to the Chicago Municipal Device with this cool story — with quotes from @ladytophamcatt.bsky.social and @pmorse.bsky.social, who are always good to hear from.
Inspired by a delightful back-and-forth on here recently between @robertloerzel.bsky.social & @ladytophamcatt.bsky.social sharing photos of the Chicago Municipal Device, I thought it’d be fun to write about what the hell it even is and why you can spot it all over town once you look for it

One thing that is really heartening about this time in Chicago (I'm sure in other cities too) is that a LOT of people who aren't normally as plugged in to community organizing or movement work are finding little pockets of involvement and even leading in their own right. It's how we win.

proud to be in community with my cool friends!
On Friday, Emily Hilleren and Lauren Vega ferried a care package containing whistles and instructional zines to Minneapolis, the focus of the latest federal immigration action.

Wonderful essay on "manhood" and gender boundaries by @modernistwitch.myatproto.social for @flaminghydra.com (if you haven't subscribed, fix that!). Much of what skolnik says here applies as well to other culturally constructed identities, including religious identity, the subject of my work.

hark, foul gull!
There's a genus of seabird called Fulmars and the name comes from a Norse word meaning "foul gull" because it looks like a gull but it will spray this really awful stinky oil out of its stomach at you if you threaten it.
