The image is predominantly dark, with an almost black silhouetted trees in the foreground and dark, rolling plains behind, ending at dim, flat horizon. Overhead the sky is a little lighter, but again a fairly uniform dull grey, except about two thirds of the way down there is a break, and rays of sunlight are streaming through, from vertical to heavily slanted, illuminating the scene and bringing promise of light and day.

Although it's some time after sunrise, the plains below and nearby trees are still in gloom, and low, heavy cloud completely obscures the sunlight overhead. Far off, almost out to sea, the local cloud ends, and a line of cumulus stands out bright and white in the distant sunlight. The horizon behind them is light also, and the light reflects brightly off a large dam in the otherwise dark plain. The scene is framed by a series of eucalypt silhouettes, providing a counterpoint texture to the clouds and the plain.
