![Ensure Military Pay During the Government Shutdown
During a government shutdown, active-duty service members and personnel must continue to carry out their duties while their scheduled paychecks are delayed until the shutdown is over. During the 2013 government shutdown, Congress passed legislation to ensure that military pay and allowances continued on time.
Rep. Jen Higgins (R-VA) has introduced a similar bill for this shutdown, H.R. 5401, the Pay Our Troops Act of 2026. Despite the bill having wide bipartisan support, as well as an endorsement from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Speaker Mike Johnson has not brought the bill to the floor for a vote.
The first missed pay period for military service members will be tomorrow, on October 15th, but Speaker Johnson has cancelled all work in the House indefinitely. Democrats tried to pass the bill on Oct 10th, but it was blocked by Republicans.
Without timely pay, military families will struggle to pay for food, rent, medication and other necessities. But despite Trump and Speaker Johnson’s proclamations of support for our military, they are hindering the passage of a bipartisan bill to ensure their pay.

🔹President Trump’s new “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” is an attempt to force universities to sign a new pledge or risk losing access to federal research grants, student loans, and visas.
Education and legal experts warn this compact is a direct attack on First Amendment protections—including free inquiry, speech, and academic independence. It hands political appointees the power to decide what can be taught, who can study, and which research is acceptable. MIT is so far the only university that has rejected the plan as unconstitutional and politically coercive.

![Call & Comment about EAC Proposal to Change Voting Requirements
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC)—a bipartisan agency created to help states run elections—is now considering a proposal that would require voters to show a passport or other proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. This echoes previous failed attempts, like the SAVE Act (good job calling about this over the summer!!) and a blocked executive order, to impose restrictive proof-of-citizenship rules.
To combat this proposal, call your representatives AND leave a comment
