Ms. Berikelashvili is not alone with her call for change. The right of people with intellectual disabilities to live independently and to work are still not respected in many countries in Europe.

🇬🇪 What happened in Georgia?

From 23-26 September, 12 self-advocates spoke at Hear Our Voices! events about what matters most to them:

🩺 healthcare,
📖 education,
👷employment,
🏡 independent living,
🎨 art,
🏀 sport,
⚖️ and equal rights.

More than 120 people over 3 days.

What a success!

There are many governments in Europe (and in other places too) making lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families harder.
Cutting money for support.
Allowing worse quality of services.
Bringing back institutions.

We won't accept backsliding.

In June, we named our traineeships after the first President of the European Platform of Self-Advocates, Ulla Topi:
"I hope that people who choose this program and learn about self-advocacy will agree with that everyone should have their say on decisions that affect their lives."

We know too well that national governments often decide to underspend on social inclusion, including for persons with disabilities, when obligations are not in place.
