When I tossed out the old container of paints used to do the cover painting for WORDS OF RADIANCE, it landed upside down in my wastebasket on a piece of paperboard I had been using as a palette for something else. 1/2

Elric stands on an outcrop of rock with skulls at his feet. He wears a black hooded cloak trimmed in gold and jeweled bracers. He cradles Stormbringer as the length of the runesword, glowing purple, extends well above his head. Below him water spills frothy onto the shore but as it stretches back, placid and glassy, it gives way to erupting vents of lava.

Even in this sadness, I still think about how mid Metallica is and how Iron Maiden is a boring band with a terrible discography, four or five good albums out of seventeen is just bad numbers... I don't care how good the good ones are. That's a bad band who made a few good albums.

I am not this sadness. It's just here for a little while. I will try and keep myself to one big saddo post a day. I don't want to bum anyone out but writing this out helps me process it all. Thanks to the folks who've reached out with kindness. I will balance out and get back to myself.

When I did go to sleep, I sat the edge of the bed before I laid down. I always did this because Hannah would to be on my side of the bed using my pillows. I need to gently wake her up before I can get under the sheets. But she wasn't there. My pillows were cold, and I could have just got in bed.

After we got settled yesterday we continued on with the therapy session. We took a break just before my wife went to sleep and went through all the old photos dumped on our laptop from over the years. It helped immensely.

Halfway through Wednesday's sadness fest we started watching the fellowship of the rings. Something familiar and engaging to distract the mind. Therapeutic Tolkien. It helped. We made it through to half of the Two Towers.

My muscles were looking for her. The house was so quiet. It was very hard. My wife walked in a few minutes after to find me absolutely lost in a fit of crying.

Then I went to put my keys back in my pocket and lost it even harder.

I didn't need to put them in my pocket, I don't have to go back outside. Hannah doesn't need a walk. I realized I could just take my shoes off. I don't want to take my shoes off, I want to leave them on so I can walk Hannah.

We keep a cup next to the kitchen sink with a little spoon I took from an airplane. We use it to scoop the cat food. In that cup was also Hannah's toothbrush and toothpaste. They weren't there. I absolutely broke down.

Thankfully helo threw a little celebration. He kept slamming his head into my ankles and nuzzling my feet. Yelling at me. He helped so much with that moment. I put my keys down and fed him, but just him.

I came home first yesterday, so I wasn't expecting it but I still scanned the block before I got out.

Walking into the house was always an absolute party. Hannah would jump and tackle and shove. Run around the house in celebration of someone coming home.

Coming home from work was rough. I cried harder yesterday afternoon than I had the whole of the previous day.

Every thing we do was geared toward that dog. My wife and I generally get home around the same time and I've come to expect to see them walking and saying hi when I'm getting out the car.

I've had a lot of death around me in my life. I've been meaning to sit down and start writing about it.

I feel like this might be a good time to start to do so, as I sit in the fresh weight of all this grief.

I know how this works, I know the sharpness of the pain will lessen and the good memories will start winning. They will bring smiles instead of tears. I also know the hole left behind never really gets filled.
