I have been to a handful of tech conferences in person in the last decade: Intel Developer Forum, An Event Apart, Lesbians Who Tech, and Google I/O. Attending The Commit Your Code Conference 2025, has been one of the loveliest experiences which makes it hard to believe that it is one of the most affordable conferences one can attend (aside for the plane ride out to Dallas).

Too afraid to talk at a conference?
Make Me the Bad Guy!
Introducing the new EventConvo conversation prompt cards for #CYC25!
Just walk up to someone, say the prompt on your card, and wait for them to say theirs back.
THEN you both sign the cards.
It really works.

If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut science research and education the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.

You know you’re good at self branding (your obsession) when 4 people at your office randomly gift you capybara things.

I love this, translating:
“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity” - Seneca
We must prepare, we must study because the people that are prepared perceive opportunities more easily

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office.
Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc.
Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Before I ever thought of being a software engineer, I was studying wealth disparity as a concentration. CS majors do not have enough liberal studies yet are paths to immensely privileged roles. We cannot be apolitical when we contribute so much to how the world works. We must pay attention and care

a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job
This profile has been scrubbed from the site. Rose Ferreira grew up without reliable electricity, immigrated to NY, then survived homelessness and cancer on her way to NASA. She was so moved by images from the Webb telescope she wept. This is what’s at stake

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out.
Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation.
Say equity, which a just society should pursue.
Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.
