I've been a bit silent on socials lately so it's time to introduce myself again for all my new followers. ❤️

I'm K. J. Harrowick (Kat), a SFF author who also lingers in nonfiction. By day I'm the co-founder and CTO of @iknowwhyshestayed.bsky.social - at night I roam the dark halls of strange worlds.

Self-Care is so important to rebuilding your life, finding your strength, and helping to lift the effects of gaslighting and coercive control. You can’t stand up against an abuser if you haven’t taken care of yourself. Find little ways, quiet ways to take care of yourself. You deserve it.

She saved hundreds of women in that space and her work eventually led to the creation of Refuge, one of the largest domestic abuse charity in the UK. (2/2)

Trailblazers Against Domestic Abuse: Erin Pizzey founded the first women’s refuge shelter, Chiswick Women’s Refuge in 1971. She had no resources beyond a run-down derelict house she was able to get from the city with four rooms, a galley kitchen, and a toilet. (1/2)

It posits that society’s promoted methods of intimacy and care for one of other are inadequate and equating sickness to brokenness is inherently wrong.

It is true that what abuse does to us can make us feel broken, but what is broken can be rebuilt, differently, but better.

This book discusses the intersection between trauma and chronic illness, and the things that are wrong with our world that nurtures that trauma and wrongness. (2/3)

Diving into this read, acquired during our recent trip to ALA 2025, Touch Me, I’m Sick: A Memoir in Essays by Margeaux Feldman. I’m only just starting it, but it is incredibly intriguing and has so much to do with our mission.

Control is abuse. Abuse comes in many forms. Staying informed is essential.
Did You Know? If your partner tries to take control over where you can go, who you can see, what you can wear, and when you can eat and sleep, you are abused.

If your partner threatens your well-being by controlling your basic needs such as medical services, food, housing, and access to various methods of communication, you are abused.

Abuse can come in many different forms. But nobody should control you to the point where they keep you from doing things you enjoy, and they certainly shouldn’t control your access to your needs.

THAT IS ABUSE. And calling it out is essential.

Yep--the stranger leaps out of the bushes is a way to ignore how in a way it takes a village to rape a person, all the enablers, excusers, cover-up aides, defense lawyers, NDA laws, indifferent legal system, clueless journalists treating each act as isolated rather than part of a pattern....
