Walking is not only a natural right. Walking is a legitimate use of public space and people should be supported and encouraged to choose to walk. Being an essential part of sustainable mobility, walking improves health and liveability of communities. It's the past, present and future of mobility

🚦 In São Paulo, 44% of traffic lights give only 4–5 seconds of green.
❌ And 90% of crossings are unsafe for children.

Walking shouldn’t be a health risk.

But extreme heat is making many streets too hot to use — especially for kids, older adults, and those without cars.

Pavement and public space design can reduce surface temps by 20°C.

Cool streets = walkable streets.
📊 This new infographic, based on findings by Jehle et al. (2022), shows what encourages and discourages walking on the way to public transport.

👨‍🦽‍➡️ Walking is the first and last step of every public transport journey, and its quality can make or break the experience.

From wide, smooth footpaths to long waits at crossings, the walking environment deeply shapes whether people choose to walk to the bus, tram or metro.
We’re calling for:
✅ 85 cm bonnet height cap by 2035
✅ Mandatory child-visibility tests
✅ Bonnet height listed in vehicle data
✅ Local fees for oversized vehicles (like in Paris, Cardiff, Lyon)

#UrbanMobility #MobilityJustice
📊 Why this matters:

– Avg bonnet height in 🇪🇺 rose from 76.9 cm (2010) to 83.8 cm (2024)
– 10 cm = 22–27% ↑ in fatal crash risk
– Some SUVs make 9yo children invisible to drivers

(Source: @transenv.bsky.social + @cleancitiescampaign.org )
🚨 Oversized SUV fronts = danger on our streets.

Thanks to the insights of a @transenv.bsky.social and @cleancitiescampaign.org report we have signed a joint letter to the @ec.europa.eu demanding action to cap bonnet heights and protect pedestrians.

Streetcar ridership did not merely decline. It was deterred.

Streetcar passengers did not endanger motorists, but motorists endangered them.

In every city, people boarding, alighting from, or waiting for streetcars accounted for a large fraction of pedestrian traffic casualties. ...

A sure sign of downtown vitality is “heavy pedestrian movement.” When “traffic” is redefined so as to exclude pedestrian traffic, and when walking is pathologized as a source of “delay” to motor vehicles, a city is in trouble.
Physical buttons are making a comeback in cars!
Touchscreens can be more distracting than alcohol or drugs. Slower reaction times can lead to increased risk of pedestrians being killed.

Research from Sweden puts the lifetime cost of car ownership at nearly £500,000 - of which 41% is shouldered by society. From air pollution to road deaths, congestion to climate emissions, the damage caused by our car-first culture extends far beyond individual drivers.
