Please read this whole thread and (whether you live in one of these 21 states or not), please write your members of Congress and tell them you want the Right to Read bill passed.

The right to access speech without the government viewpoint-limiting our taxpayer-funded libraries is on the line.

Folks, that is 21 STATES who want to revoke your First Amendment Rights to use public and public school libraries.

Nearly half the states in the US want to dismantle YOUR RIGHTS. You need to be giving a shit.

No
one
will
save
us
but
us.

No one else is coming.

This absolutely breaks my heart. 💔
Thank you @heykellyjensen.bsky.social for this coverage.
The state has appealed this decision, and much of that appeal hinges on the decision from Little vs. Llano County from the 5th district. Here is their initial brief: drive.google.com/file/d/1RC-T...

What a treat to visit LBJ National Park today and see @bartography.bsky.social’s book in the gift shop! And this quote struck a chord with me. ☺️

Thank you @librarianjones.com and Suzette Baker for this powerful piece. 38 million Americans now live in an unfortunate place and time where censorship is legal.
“Authoritarians gain power when citizens stop paying attention. Visit your local library, check out books, and keep reading. If we stay unified and informed, we can ensure reading w/out restriction remains the foundation of our democracy and a fundamental freedom for all.”

Also, loudly for those in the back:

If your government officials want to censor books, let’s

VOTE
THEM
OUT!
Rulings like Little v. Llano and those that defer to the 5th Circuit going forward may limit consideration of First Amendment claims in library collection decisions, but they DO NOT require censorship, and DO NOT remove local responsibility or community voice.

Get loud. Get involved. Get local.

PUBLIC libraries in those states are not public libraries anymore. They're government mouthpieces. If the government doesn't want you to have access to a book about a gay kid, THEY get to decide that for you.

Our libraries have been stolen from us and it's not getting better.
