A byse (or bysen) in Götland is the gnome like spirit of someone obsessed with possessions and who acquired them unjustly. They wander the forest chopping wood and obsessing over property boundaries.

This first (very short) story is "The Shepherd of the Giant Mountains" by Friedrich de la Motte Foque. I'm not sure an English edition has been made since 1846? But I am sure some bibliophiles know better than I!
