This was adapted from an original story by a guy named Larry Nevin whose version of the story also had the characters literally wonder whether their progeny would "colonize" Afro Eurasia (the hemisphere that is evaporated by the sun).

(Warning Outer Limits Commentary) so I'm watching Inconstant Moon. A scientist who realizes that on the other side of the planet the sun has gone nova (or similar) and the reason there's a communication blackout is because that hemisphere has basically been evaporated by the sun.
