I briefly imagined this was because so many Kindle copies were being sold, and Amazon was struggling to print these ePubs at sufficient speed.

I think it's deeper than that. The ultra wealthy need us to think they are special - and get preferential treatment (including taxation).
A "pleb" getting to the top table has to be undermined by these press barons, including the strategy of ruining their marriage.
