So you don't think Camden or Greater Manchester are Labour run?
I don't work at a council, but for the strike at TfGM last year we couldn't get press stuff out nationally - nothing on the unison website until we had already won. No visit to Camden traffic wardens strike, right by UNISON HQ.
Funny that when McAnea so clearly is putting her loyalty to Starmer's Labour Party before UNISON policy or supporting members in Labour-run employers.
It looks like there will be just two candidates for UNISON leader – Christina McAnea and Andrea Egan. Elections can generate waffle and confusion. I've picked through their manifestos for actionable pledges – stripping out the vague and aspirational.

The 2025 UNISON General Secretary election has now begun. I am standing to be our union's first ever lay member General Secretary.

If elected as General Secretary I will fight for higher pay for all of us and I will only take the wage of a social worker. Support my campaign: andrea4gs.org.uk

According to this armed officer in Kent, simply holding a Palestine flag and displaying 'Free Gaza' and 'Israel is committing Genocide' is possible grounds for arrest for supporting Palestine Action (and for unlawfully taking personal details)

We have had a report saying two women walking up to a protest today at BAe Samlesbury were stopped by Lancashire Police and advised to remove their t-shirts that say 'Free Palestine', as it may "breach the proscription order".

And so it begins.

A Unite aerospace rep writes about how union members in his workplace defeated a transphobic attack after the Supreme Court judgement. Supporting trans people isn’t just vital for trade unionists – raising political issues like this can help build workplace organisation.

We are, and have always been, ready to negotiate - even when under attack.

Are you finally ready to talk meaningfully @ucu.org.uk ?

#StopTUVictimisation
Question...

CAN YOU NAME AN EMPLOYER WHO:
• threatens union officers with a disciplinary minutes before
ACAS talks?
• offers nothing concrete in said ACAS talks then walks away because the union won't agree to call off all strikes?
• writes deeply inaccurate and inflammatory emails to all staff?
• then issues public disinformation while threatening every union rep?

....Asking for a friend
A piece I wrote for @rs21.bsky.social arguing against the tendency of the left to spend too much time oriented on others already within our movements, and not enough on winning over new people or building revolutionary organisation. revsoc21.uk/2025/05/01/h...

The removal of Steve North from his elected roles of UNISON President and Chair of the NEC’s Staffing Committee is a politically-motivated effort to influence the NEC elections and the General Secretary election later this year.

Time For Real Change stands in Solidarity with him.
Statement: Steve North

The removal of Steve North from his elected roles of UNISON President and Chair of the NEC’s Staffing Committee is a politically-motivated effort to influence the NEC elections and the General Secretary election later this year.

The decision stems from a complaint made almost two years ago relating to how Steve carried out his role as Chair of Staffing. In the interim period the Union had not suspended Steve or placed any restrictions on his activities of any kind. The sanction comes during the first week of the NEC elections and only weeks in advance of UNISON’s National Delegate Conference.

Steve has proven to be a popular and principled President and a diligent Chair of Staffing, who has stood up for UNISON members and been willing to challenge unelected officers on behalf of members.

For too long UNISON’s senior paid officer leadership – its General Secretariat led by Christina McAnea – has dealt with disagreements over how our union should be run through politically-motivated disciplinary action against elected lay members. There has been ample evidence of this in the last two NEC terms since 2021 when Time For Real Change first achieved a majority.

Steve remains a member of UNISON and has made it clear he intends to challenge the decision against him. We send our solidarity to Steve, his family and his branch in Salford. UNISON needs real change and we are determined to deliver that change this year in the NEC and General Secretary elections.
