Hello! I seem to have a bunch of new followers from a diabetes focussed list. Welcome to my wee corner of Aotearoa!

This account is radically body/weight neutral. Any fatpbobia, body shaming, or pathologising of fat bodies will earn an instablock. Or a rant before the block if I’m feeling spicy.

Also, and I cannot emphasise this strongly enough, the purpose of education should be about much much much more than getting jobs.

When the humanities are constantly undermined, underfunded and understaffed, describing a BA in disparaging terms is really really unhelpful.

F has solved most of the difficult aspects of moving - he’s moving across the road to the flat where he already does most of his socialising and rehearsing.

I still disagree.

I think comparing degrees like this is pointless and mean spirited and frankly plays into the hands of a government determined to gut our education system.

My kids both did NCEA the most complex way possible - doing credits outside of their ‘designated’ year, adding in university and vocational courses and generally structuring it to meet their individual needs. We still all understood it just fine.

I would absolutely dispute that. Yes the skills involved in arts/humanities look softer on the surface, but the critical thinking skills and knowledge required are at least as deep as in any other discipline. (Which doesn’t mean some absolute doorknobs can’t slip though, as with any degree)

NCEA just isn’t that hard to understand. And if you’re struggling your kids can help you out.

She’s either totally checked out or bullshitting wildly.

I’m frankly surprised she has a BA. It’s quite hard to get a BA without solid critical thinking and research skills, or any curiosity about or awareness of the world around you. (OFC she should also have a megaton of experience in actual education)

How is she going to change all our qualifications when she doesn’t know how exams even work?

Getting rid of Art History is just another part of this government’s war on critical thinking. Art History asks students to view things in their wider cultural/social/political context. It teaches vital skills that translate across so many areas. Also, it’s really fun. Please sign the petition.

Could you pls do an old ex-Art History teacher a solid, sign this petition to save the subject in our schools, and pass it on.

These philistines need to hear from you all.

Thank you

Edvard Munch's 'Scream' but with the text 'I can't believe they're cancelling Art History' in a speech bubble

Did Erica Stanford go to school? In this country?

The deep deep irony of how much work is required to get support when you’re already overwhelmed

Having the cultural knowledge there when you need it is a good thing.

C’s first favourite band was The Pet Shop Boys (thanks the the Flight of the Conchords’ pastiche). He now has a degree in programming synthesisers.

When my kids were wee the CD shop in the mall always had a big table of “greatest hits” compilations for like $3 each, so we gave the kids a taste of everything.

I guess, though my recollection is that a lot of his 80s hits stayed in rotation on radio etc for years afterwards.

Why does Bluesky keep asking if I’m writing in Portuguese? I know I make a lot of typos, but I’m pretty sure at least most of my posts are recognisably English.

This Gen Xer is appalled that her peers may not have provided their Zoomers with an appropriate musical education.
