I think it's fair to say that any city where this could happen has inadequate housing, and a city with as much centralised wealth as New York and still has people drowning in basements when it rains means that something is out of balance. Which of course everyone has known is the case since forever.
I was talking about sex workers. Maybe you should talk to some yourself and get a better idea because I don't think most would want your sympathy, just some basic human empathy (and fair compensation).
Sex work isn't uniform, it's extremely diverse and the reasons for people choosing it as work are as well. It is a legitimate preference for some people. For some people, particularly those with agency, it's less degrading than a lot of other service work.
If someone is independent and in control of their circumstances, and everyone involved is consenting, sex work is absolutely fine. The problem is pimps and sex trafficking. There are ethical brothels out there but it's not the standard because it's not protected in the law in most places.
For a moment I felt a sense of relief when I thought there was news about an incoming cataclysmic event that I hadn't seen yet but then I realised you're just talking about music and now I'm bummed.
