i think someone over there passed go without collecting their $200
good morning! we have a latte do!
kinda crazy to think if the entire grid went down, i could plausibly still text with anyone in this circle:
just double checked... for tonight's iss flyover, i transmitted my "hello" message 13 times. it was repeated 5 times (according to ariss.net). now i need to start being a little nicer and listen more than i transmit. it's not the most reliable text messaging platform, but super fun when it works.
APRS Database Access
Reports are also archived from an amateur radio payload aboard the International Space Station which relays APRS reports from amateur radio operators around the globe.
ariss.net
"hello! wanna see the space station?!"
looking more at the data... someone (K9JKM) heard me & even replied! i missed it in the moment, though—i was too distracted.

maybe now that i know i can actually get into the station (the yagi antenna was 🔑), i might try to modify my set-up so i can reply to others during flyovers in the future.
one of the reasons i got into amateur radio was to experiment with it as a back-up emergency communications method. it's good to practice to understand its limits. in this case, i transmitted my message from my radio about 20 times, but only two got repeated through ariss.net.
not bad for a baofeng bf-f8hp, a mobilinkd tnc, a diy tape-measure yagi antenna, an android phone, and a few apps (aprsdroid and iss detector)... and a space station.

from just my location, i was able to hear others as far away as texas and connecticut.
what it looked it from the street.
victory! made it into the iss repeater!
goal tonight will be:
1) seeing the iss (obvs)
2) getting my call sign (WD4HUG) on this page of heard call signs via the repeater
looks like the iss will be highly visible and flying directly overhead tonight. time to break out the ham radios...
thanks for the reminder!
i have noticed. :)
how much time do you have?
it could be worse. the beard, that is.

i like big lattes and i cannot lie...

there's a fine line between bad latte art and good nsfw latte art.
