It’s been fantastic to meet so many MPs today for some really valuable conversations about the urgent need for fair funding for hospices.

Hospice staff make 1.4m home visits each year, helping people live well at home.

Hospices could ease NHS pressure and bring more care closer to home, but without fair funding, many hospices are fighting just to keep their doors open.

On Friday we joined a roundtable with Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, at Saint Francis Hospice, discussing key challenges like ICB commissioning and NHS pay.

We will continue to work with him and his team as we push for a long-term funding solution for hospices.

We were delighted to welcome hospices from across Scotland to our #HospiceCareWeek event in Holyrood yesterday, sponsored by Miles Briggs MSP.

MSPs heard about the incredible work of hospice teams, and the Minister spoke with many about the challenges and successes of hospice care.

Our visit came on the same day that data from the charity @hospiceuk.bsky.social reveals that one in five hospices in England have a deficit of more than £1 million, while many are cutting services.

Today, alongside my Lib Dem colleague @charlotte-cane-mp.bsky.social MP, I visited the @arthurrankhospice.bsky.social saw the wonderful facilities, and met with Deputy CEO Sara Robins. The hospice is set to lose almost £1 million in funding next year, leading to a loss of 9 out of its 23 beds.

We’re sad to see the closure of Shalom House, which leaves a gap in palliative care provision for the people of Pembrokeshire.

If we do not see sustainable funding for hospices soon, this pattern will repeat across the UK, leaving dying people without essential services.
