Impossible? No. But the US has a built-in brake on progress and bottom-up change until everything about elections is massively reformed. The current setup is an archaic system that made sense pre electronic communications but now has no purpose except to keep the already powerful in place.

America doesn't really have an actual democracy as much as it does team sports at this stage, though. It's a two-party system designed to prevent any outsider candidates or parties challenging the norm. Having captured one of those parties, the autocrats have paralyzed the democratic function.

I think the problem is that the highest institution, the SCOTUS, has not merely folded, but willingly allied itself with the Republican cause. And the Democrats seem so decorum-poisoned that I cannot imagine them challenging this or hitting it with any kind of reform.
