Distrust comes from observation of what he believes is unnecessary harm. Cruelty towards civilians, a tendency to break promises or exploit loopholes, generally manipulative behavior, or the presence of things he deems Fishy like the guild.

Zhongli’s trust in general is different than most people, as he evidently trusts their motives enough to collaborate with them. While he is overall wary of their actions, he himself has killed many ‘for the greater good’ and wouldn’t focus on that
