If you like the vibes of Marienbad, I do recommend diving into the work of Robbe-Grillet if you haven't already. Jealousy (novel) and Trans-Europ-Express (film) are good jumping off points.

Have you been to Golden Hill Park? A bunch of funny monkeys running around and some beautiful views. There's even a bus stop right there. If you have five full days, you might want to see if you can pop over to Shenzhen for a day or two.

It is the (embarrassing) truth though. As a Tulsan, I never had anyone outside of Oklahoma ask me about it until the show aired. Considering that the subject wasn't really taught in OK schools until the mid-90s, it's not surprising. Not going to bat for the show, but this is an actual impact it had.

This is all due to Warner Bros being weird with their HK titles. That being said, Criterion releasing The Blade gives me hope. Pedicab has an incredible fight scene between Sammo and Lau Kar-Leung that everyone should see.

A lot of interplay between Taiwanese and Mainland craft beer over the years. Taihu used to have multiple locations in the PRC. In fact, one of the biggest viral videos of Chinese craft beer happened at their Xiamen location.

If they are watching it on a modern screen, something in the chain is upscaling already. Might as well be something good. That being said, have you done any comparisons between Sline36 and upscaling used by MadVR and MPV? MadVR looks so good with all the good knobs maxed out.

With great practice (temp surfing + manual preinfusion), it's possible to make a great latte with the Gaggia, but it's damn near impossible to do it twice in one morning. The steam consistency is the big one for milk drinks. Gaggiuino is the way. Much easier than it looks to install. Game changer.

The first film or TV show to really understand Tulsa since Rumble Fish. Watchmen gets a lot right, but it looks completely wrong since it was filmed in Georgia.

In China? Have you been here before? Rent in major cities is so high that migrant workers (like waimai drivers) sleep 4+ beds to a room. In Beijing, the median salary is 10500 RMB/month. The median rent within the 5th Ring Road is 7000 RMB for a 1 bedroom.

Great list! What a year. I'd add Asthenic Syndrome, Unbelievable Truth, Interrogation, Caligari, The Church, Beijing Watermelon, Cook/Thief/Wife/Lover, ItLoD4, Elephant, Meat Love, Gang of Four, Patlabor, Recollections of the Yellow House, My 20th C, Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia, and Sukkubus

I have successfully not bought any new accessories or tools for my Gaggia in over 3 months. Do I have stuff in my cart? Of course. But this is a win for me.

Excited to share this illustration I drew for @antodemico.bsky.social new book "Lich Codex". This is probably one of my favorite illustrations I've ever created. You can pre-order the book through this link: pointyhat.myshopify.com

I have one. Bought a broken one from Japan for cheap a few years ago. PSU recap and a new rubber band for the floppy fixed it up easily. The video output is awful. Weird scaling and windowboxing through S-video. I'd love to sell it and buy a desktop FM Towns instead.

Djeng has quickly shot up into the commentary pantheon for me. Good mix of "here's a short bio of the guy on screen", personal anecdotes, historical/cultural context and responding to the film. Also zero dead air which is crazy considering how many he does.

Walters and Governor Stitt had a big falling out in 2023. Walters is doing stupid shit all the time and often gets more news coverage than the governor. I think the porn thing was a good opportunity to show him the door and the non-profit is a soft landing so he wouldn't put up a fuss.

Best to just follow @michaelpettis.bsky.social if you want ongoing commentary on how this strategy is working for China. He usually will post the major articles floating around on the topic as they pop up.

There are a whole host of internal economic, political and cultural reasons why we won't see a Chinese version of USAID. It's not a geopolitical strategic decision. Philanthropy is heavily discouraged in general. Add on the budget crisis and the general poor state of domestic social services.
