Despite their importance, bats face serious threats. They need trees for roosting, hibernating, and raising their young, making forest protection essential. Learn more here: www.batcon.org/bats-need-tr...
Bats Need Trees
More than just a place to sleep, trees and forests provide critical resources that bats need to survive.
www.batcon.org
Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight, and a single bat can devour up to 3,000 insects in one night, including mosquitoes and crop-damaging insects. They're natural pest controllers that help keep our woods, farms, and communities healthy.

This color change isn't just beautiful, it's a fascinating survival strategy. As trees prepare for winter, they break down chlorophyll and reabsorb nutrients, revealing the pigments that were hidden all summer long. Take a fall hike this week and see how many native species you can identify! #hhltny
🍂As the temperatures drop and daylight shortens, local trees are putting on their spectacular autumn show. The Hudson Valley's diverse forests create one of the most stunning fall displays in the Northeast! #hhltny #lovethehighlands
Together, they provide vital nectar and pollen for migrating monarchs, late-flying bees, and other pollinators stocking up before winter. #northeastplants #pollinators #hhltny #lovethehighlands

From the sunny sprays of tall goldenrod, flat-topped goldenrod, and broad-leaved goldenrod to the vibrant bursts of New England aster and the delicate blooms of calico aster, these native wildflowers create a spectacular display.

While leaf peepers are readying for the brilliant color pop from northeast trees, another fall show is happening closer to the ground! The fields and forest edges are glowing with goldenrods and asters, classic harbingers of the season.

If you're looking for group hands-on activities, register for upcoming planting days on October 19th and 26th at Granite Mountain Preserve. Visit www.hhlt.org to register for planting days or download preserve maps for your next adventure! #nationalpubliclandsday #lovethehighlands #hhltny
Among them are HHLT's Humble Bee Hollow (Garrison, NY) and Granite Mountain Preserve (Putnam Valley, NY). We encourage you to get outside this fall, explore new trails and find moments of connection with nature wherever you are.
This #nationalpubliclandsday, we're celebrating lands that protect critical habitats, safeguard natural resources, and support biodiversity through active stewardship while offering opportunities to connect with nature. Throughout the Hudson Highlands, there are many public spaces to explore.

We can help through simple conservation efforts:
- Turn off unnecessary lights from 11 PM to dawn
- Point outdoor lights downward and shield them
- Dim indoor lights or close curtains
- Use motion sensors for lights
LIGHTS OUT for our feathered friends!🦅 Fall migration is underway, with millions of birds traveling south. The Hudson Valley is on a major migration route, and last night, over 363,000 birds crossed Putnam County! These travelers face challenges from light pollution, which can disorient them.
