But, liars will always find ways to make their lie true for people who get lazy and don't want to do the work to get to the truth. The adage 'you can't always believe what you read' is an important warning.

I think it is possible, but more difficult now then it was when the book was written, due to the ability to share things via multiple types of communication channels. And, the ability to save items in various ways. The internet creates a large worldwide network that would be hard to manage.

It's a warning and so clear in its description of how they got to where they are in the story - it can't help but be influential (unfortunately on both sides). Just like 'The Man in the High Castle' - it's like a choose your own adventure book, showing the outcome of a different choice

I had a hard time caring about them. I find myself emphasizing at times, but I didn't find them to be likeable.

I'm not sure likeable is the right term. He's the readers connection to the story and there are glimmers of moments where you could empathize with him, but ultimately he's selfish and weak. I got the sense others had attempted the same as him, with the same results.
