Whilst today’s strategy, coupled with the impending removal of the two-child benefit cap, is a significant step in the right direction, we urge the Government to go further to ensure all children have the opportunity to thrive. 5/5

Older children cannot be left behind. Our ‘Addressing Education and Health Inequity’ report shows that children in deprived areas continue to have lower educational attainment. We continue to call for reviews of the National Funding Formula to close the education gap. 4/5

While the strategy shows commitment, it lacks a clear plan to address systemic drivers of poverty in minority ethnic households, which experience disproportionately high rates of deprivation. In order to truly end child poverty, Government actions need to support all groups 3/5

The Government need to fully commit to ending the cycle of poverty that can persist for generations.
The time for incremental change has passed - we need bold, coordinated action that matches the scale of the challenge.

We welcome the Government’s Child Poverty Strategy today and the focus on areas of deprivation, but there is much more to do.
Our research shows 34% of children in the North live in poverty compared to 28% nationally - and the gap is widening

The scale of the health-related economic inactivity crisis is greater in the North of England, with workers more likely to lose their job due to ill health.

Our new #HealthforWealth report sets out recommendations to address this disparity:

The removal of the two-child cap shows the power of collaboration and advocacy. It will lift thousands of children from poverty, but rates remain high. We’ll continue to push for a cross-sector strategy to tackle root causes and reduce health inequalities.

The two-child cap, ended in the recent Budget, punished children & deepened poverty. We have pushed for its removal with research, @childofthenorth.bsky.social APPG meetings & political engagement. This is a great step, but the fight's not over.
