There's no test that tells you if someone has acute sickle cell pain. Someone can feel like their bones are breaking from sickle cell disease with completely normal lab results. The gold standard is to ask the person if they're in pain.

#SickleCellAwareness #SickleCellAdvocacy
When you have sickle cell pain you can't take care of at home - Medical guidelines say you should get treatment within 1 hour. If you're waiting, here are some tips to help you:
- After 30 minutes: Check in with any nurse
- After 1 hour: Ask for the charge nurse

The emergency room sees you at one moment in time, like a photograph. This means you may have a problem needing emergent care. But it's too early to diagnose. This is why ERs tell you when to come back.

This is why you might leave the ER without knowing exactly what's wrong. But, this doesn't mean you should have stayed home. The ER did their job by making sure you were safe and giving you next steps.

Incorrect blood pressure technique leads to wrong treatment decisions.

Focus on the biggest mistakes: cuff size, bare arm, 5-minute rest, empty bladder. Provide handouts and show proper technique during office visits.

Help patients understand why blood pressure readings vary throughout the day.

Explain common causes (stress, caffeine, activity), help them see their personal patterns, and reassure that variability is normal.

#BloodPressure #PatientCommunication #HealthLiteracy
Some people's blood pressure drops a lot after eating, especially older adults and people with high blood pressure.

If you feel lightheaded or dizzy after meals, rest and get up slowly. Tell your healthcare provider! 🩺

Patients often won't speak up when confused. Try these strategies for finding out what questions patients have:
✓ "What questions do you have?"
✓ "Tell me how you'll take this medication"
✓ "I want to make sure I explained this well"

#MedicalEducation #PatientCare
What's one question you wish you had asked during your last ER visit?
"What should I watch for at home?" is a big one. The ER moves fast but these questions matter.
