IM works with 500ms latency. Relaying audio or video in a call does not which is why one wants to run relay servers (TURN) really close to the user which means AWS, Azure or GCP.
Instant messaging demands near-zero latency. Voice and video in particular require complex global signaling & regional relays to manage jitter and packet loss. These are things that AWS, Azure, and GCP provide at global scale that, practically speaking, others (in the western context) don’t. 5/

The (super)bad news is that they rejected the #RTC devroom, though... 😢 I can't remember the last time that happened, I think it's always been there? No room for #webrtc #sip and other stuff this time around... or #moq, since I'm pretty sure we would have seen submissions on that too

They tried...
How is it that despite Slack being (probably?) the most loved chat tool, it has no usable video calling product?

All companies I know using Slack use Meet / Zoom / or even MS Teams for video calling.

Why did Slack never build anything? (no, Slack Huddles does not count as one)

🚨The big question: without a legal obligation, will they fund the web platform that the world relies on at anywhere near Google’s ~$1B/year level?

Voluntary web SDOs like W3C, IETF, and ECMA are premised on the idea that vendors who step into their ring can step out and ship what they like in their own products.

So why do they allow Apple to remain in good standing when Cupertino dynamited the foundations?

Your job as an engineer is not just to make things, but to construct an understanding of the underlying systems so that you build *appropriate* and *durable* things.

Reject silver bullets. Question marketing to the point of disbelief or nuanced partial acceptance. It's the job.

Me to a product leader: your product sucks compared to your competition, here's the side-by-side.

The competition: ~2MB of critical path JS (>6MB unzipped) with React and an effing rainbow table (380K, 770K unzipped) in the main bundle.

Average is now so bad you don't even have to be good to win!

"Writing code is the easy part.
Understanding the problem is the hard part."

The implications of this truth are massively and quickly compounding when it comes to AI-assisted development.
