In the 1937/38 chess season Hampshire managed to win the Montague Jones Cup after losing in the final the previous two years. They also fielded one existing and one future British Chess Champion in some of their matches.

The known Hampshire junior chess champions have been added to the site. These join the list of the senior titles, which date back to 1930. The first junior title was thought to have been from the 1967/68 season.

With the 1990's Portsmouth Evening News added to the @BNArchive I have managed to locate some details on the 1991 Hampshire Individual Chess Championship. This was won by Bob Noyce with 5 points from his 6 games. hampshirechesshistory.co.uk/hampshire-in...
Hampshire fielded Sir George Thomas and CHOD Alexander in one of their county matches in the 1936/27 season. See how they did and other Hampshire Chess activities in the recent post.

He seemed to reach a strong level for someone of that age though, as played high boards for Hampshire (up to bd 4).
The fact that there is a Chapman Cup in Kent, and there was one in Hampshire and Dorset links to this being named after the same person (as not many people want cups named after them?)
The references always seem to say CF for Dorset and Hants but C for Kent (did not play for Sussex against Hampshire). But the board numbers he played on do seem consistent with being one player (or someone of the same strength). The Dorset Individual Championship was originally the Chapman Trophy
All I had was the details which said he was also involved in Sussex before Dorset. I have a C Chapman playing for Kent against Hampshire from 1900 - 1911. If this is the same person may help? email is [email protected] which may help discuss further?
Not too much afraid, the FL Taylor booklet on the site has a few references - made Life VP in 1936 when he left the county and he was very generous with sponsoring the KO tournaments.
The Hampshire Advertiser and Western Daily Press are good sources and he was President of Dorset from 1929?
The 1935/36 county chess season saw Hampshire reach the final of the Montague Jones Cup. Meanwhile two players who played for Hampshire finished 1st and 2nd in the 1935 British Championship.
Post covering the season on the website.

Obviously don't post much political but whilst researching the 1935/36 county chess season came across the following in the Hampshire Advertiser. Can't help but feel that the future Lord Haw-Haw rhetoric is similar to what we are seeing currently.
Analysis of the Hampshire County players performance from the first match in 1887 to the most recent in 2025 has been completed and some details added to the website. This is from over 1000 of the known 1100 plus matches.

Just added a post on HCA County records, and added some additional details on Blake's impressive record.

Yes, would be great to see this. A huge chess career and someone who helped Hampshire no end by playing board one for such a long period.
Britbase have an article on the 1898 Southern Counties Congress held in Salisbury, which saw Joseph Blake share first place and Francis Elwell finish 7th.
Other local players were in other sections.

Hampshire played 5 OTB and 3 Correspondence matches this season. This included a new OTB opponent in Cambridgeshire as well as a return to playing local rivals Wiltshire after a break of 21 years.

I have added a blog element to the website, for posts which are not specifically related to Hampshire Chess History.
The first one is a look at my 2024/25 chess season performance.

Hampshire went into the 1933/34 County season as holders of the Montague Jones Cup for the previous 2 years. But this year Hertfordshire would prove up to the challenge. Match details and other HCA activities for the season in the current article.

New at BritBase: a collection of 1,209 games played by Sir George Thomas - even allowing for the inclusion of 164 stubs, that makes it the largest collection of his games available to date. saund.org.uk/britbase/pgn...
