Though she and her sisters were painted and studied, they did not hold official roles at court like their father and brother. They were treated more as wonders than equals.

Fontana’s portrait invites us to ask: When we look at someone who is different, what do we truly see?
Atop her head sits a crown of snowdrops, clover, and a carnation. The crown gives an impression of refinement, but each flower grows in the wild. This contrast suggests how Antonietta was often seen, part courtly marvel, and part mystery.
Behind her right ear is a lily of the valley, symbolizing purity and humility. It also grows wild without human care, reflecting how people at the time often viewed those with hypertrichosis—as natural, untamed, and outside societal norms.
Fontana’s portrait captures the tension between admiration and alienation. Antonietta appears poised, dressed finely, and holding a handwritten note that explains her background.
Her father, Pedro Gonzales (Latinized as Petrus Gonsalvus), was the first well-documented case in medical history. The family became known as curiosities, observed by doctors, written about by scholars, and immortalized by artists.
Antonietta was real. She was not a myth or a sideshow act. Her family lived in the courts of Europe and shared a rare condition called hypertrichosis, often nicknamed “werewolf syndrome” for the thick hair it causes on the face and body.
Portrait of a Werewolf? Not Quite. 👇

This is one of the most intriguing portraits ever painted. Meet Antonietta Gonzales, depicted around 1595 by Lavinia Fontana, one of the most accomplished female artists of the Italian Renaissance.
Needless to say, we love a good tour guide joke. 🖤🐶😂

Don't want to give anyone a jumpscare, but...🌷🤯
By morning, authorities had tracked him down. He was arrested and now faces serious charges, including aggravated kidnapping and child endangerment. He remains in custody on a $500,000 bond.

Turns out, what we imagined as kids wasn’t as far off as we thought.
What she found instead was a man hiding in the shadows.

The intruder, 27-year-old Martin Villalobos Jr., was under a court order to stay away from the home. After a brief struggle, during which one of the children was knocked over, he fled into the night.
WARNING: This isn’t a ghost story. It’s way worse. 😳😱

In Great Bend, Kansas, what began as a simple bedtime ritual turned into something far more unsettling. On the night of March 24, a babysitter was trying to ease a child’s fear of monsters by checking under the bed.
I’m a grown adult with bills & responsibilities, and I still run up the basement stairs like something’s chasing me. 👹🕳️🏃‍♂️ Tell me I’m not the only one!

Thanks to @vancityreynolds.bsky.social for recently visiting our ticket office in Kingston!*

*Some might say this is photoshopped, but let’s be honest—anyone starring in a movie called 'Spirit' is obviously a big fan of ghost stories. 👻😉 #kingston
