Sixers & Basketball talk for LibertyBallers.com https://www.libertyballers.com/authors/harrison-grimm

I do find it pretty ironic that people keep asking “what happens when Jared McCain or Paul George come back?” while Maxey is averaging 43 minutes a game, Edgecombe is at 40, and the Sixers are running Barlow or Walker on the perimeter for some of these sets lol
Don’t think Kelly Oubre has been talked about enough. Through four games he’s averaging:

17.8 PPG
6.5 REB
1.8 APG
1 STL
1 BLK
0.8 TO

On 51/45(!!)/94 splits. He’s taken five threes per game too. Not bad for a guy who got a lot of grief in the offseason…
This is the standard Maxey talked about. They had every reason to mail it in — Wizards hitting everything, back-to-back fatigue — but they held strong and found a way to keep the lead manageable. One run was all it took.

Four straight games of pure effort from the Sixers.
Sixers might not have enough gas to pull this off but VJ Edgecombe’s catch-and-shoot game has been on display for this one: 4/6 from 3, with two four point plays.
VJ Edgecombe definitely tweaked his shot since summer league. Way more arc on it now.
Per Tony Jones of The Athletic Trendon Watford will make his #Sixers debut tonight.

Sixers getting some needed reinforcements. T-Wat should help take some of the dribbling/playmaking load off of the Maxey-VJ-Grimes trio.
Revisiting my VJ notes from 5+ months ago — I didn’t account enough for Baylor’s spacing. That poor spacing hurt his finishing, playmaking, & drives. Even with McCain/PG out, NBA spacing has cleared up a lot of the concerns I had with him as a prospect.
Wholesome moment: VJ Edgecombe getting some love from the Sixers crowd last night.

It’ll be hard to argue against an All-NBA appearance from Tyrese Maxey if he keeps up this level of play. The only guard who has been on the same level this far has been SGA, and he’s the reigning MVP.

Seriously feels like he’s taking another jump this season.
Man, this is a really impressive performance from the Sixers. Down several rotation guys. Maxey with another 40(!!) bomb. VJ stepping up, not looking like a rookie whatsoever. Both Grimes & Oubre have been awesome. All w/out Embiid, George, McCain & more vs a talented Magic group
Haven’t talked about him much, but Kelly Oubre has quietly been very productive. Helps that he’s hitting most of his shots wi the Sixers being so shorthanded.
This is a matchup where Adem Bona has to shine and shine he has. Three consecutive defensive stops, two with blocks. Great to see.
Fun hypothetical I’m thinking about right now: If VJ Edgecombe were in the 2024 draft class, he’d be selected ___ overall.

Fill in the blank.
My personal favorites so far:

• VJ Max
• Lightning & Thunder
• Twin Turbo
Come up with a nickname for this backcourt…
Joel Embiid is out for knee injury management against Orlando. Barlow (elbow laceration), Paul George, Jared McCain, and Trendon Watford will also be sidelined. This is the first game of a back-to-back, with the Wizards up next on Tuesday.
VJ Edgecombe with a well-rounded statline tonight: 15 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Good example of just how he can impact the game so much beyond scoring as a guard.
Major props to Andre Drummond. This might’ve been the best game of his second Sixers tenure. He’s a major reason they’re going to win this game.
I can appreciate the way the Sixers have played these first two games. Haven’t been perfect, but they’ve found ways to stay afloat and storm back after being down. Can’t say that was the case much last year.
There’s a chance you’re calling a game WAY too tight if you’re blowing the whistle on nearly every possession
Grimes has also put together a strong bounce back performance thus far. He’s got 17 points, 3 assists on 6/7 shooting.

The Sixers backcourt trio of Grimes, Maxey, and Edgecombe combined for 40 points and 13 assists in the first half.
Strong opening for Embiid, who is already up to 9 points and has been to the free throw line four times. He’s been featured quite a bit as a screener, and has really moved the ball well too.
Very excited to see VJ and Kon Knueppel in action tonight. Flagg and Harper have rightfully gotten most of the headlines, but these two are going to be great. Can’t say it enough — this draft class has been a blast to follow.
Could be coincidence (I don’t think it is), but I really appreciate how much ahead of their respective age VJ and Jared McCain are. Very simple quote, but also one we often forget as people.
VJ Edgecombe dropped a “comparison is a thief of joy” when asked about comparing himself to others in his draft class.
