On a dark blue background, text says: 'Standing firm in power and pride. Katherine Johnson. Mathematics / Space science. 1918–2020. Her precision in mathematical modelling has parallels in the climate and atmospheric models we rely on today.' The image also features a black and white photo of a person sitting at a desk and smiling at the camera. On a dark blue background, text says: 'Standing firm in power and pride. Charles Henry Turner. Zoology / Environmental science. 1867–1923. His early insights into behavioural ecology and environmental adaptation connect to today’s understanding of climate-driven species change.' The image also features a black and white photo of a person in a suit with a serious facial expression. On a dark blue background, text says: 'Standing firm in power and pride. Chien-Shiung Wu. Physics. 1912–1997. Fundamental to modern particle physics, she paved the way for advances in quantum theory and physics-based climate and atmospheric models.' The image also features a black and white photo of a person in a white blouse in front of some equipment with many wires. On a dark blue background, text says: 'Standing firm in power and pride. George Washington Carver. Chemistry / Environmental science. 1864–1943. He was an early pioneer of soil conservation and sustainability, which is directly relevant to today’s climate-resilient farming.' Why I do what I do!

Communicating science and its impact is a crucial component of climate action. Providing people with accessible information is important because it offers clarity and supports mental wellbeing by reducing stress and anxiety, improving decision-making, and fostering resilience.
How does working in atmospheric science during a climate crisis impact you?

We asked our colleagues to share their thoughts on the theme of this year's World Mental Health Day - mental health in catastrophes and emergencies.

#WMHD25 #WorldMentalHealthDay
We'd also really appreciate if you could share this article with anyone who may benefit.

And for transparency, this article was proofread by AI and suggestions were made to improve the flow and structure of the information we are sharing.
I recently asked colleagues @ncas-uk.bsky.social about the conscious ways that AI can be used for scientific research. Scroll to the end of the article for their quick tips and recommended resources - and thank you to everyone who contributed!

Now powering atmospheric observations with solar energy! We’re not just studying climate change, we’re actively lowering our carbon footprint while doing so 🌞
A recent collaboration between @ncas-uk.bsky.social and JCB has shown that modern hydrogen engines can cut nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by 40 to 500 times compared to modern diesel engines. A big positive for the construction industry and clean air in urban areas 🏙️
New research from NCAS highlights a promising solution to rising construction-related air pollution: hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE).

NOx emissions are 40-500 times lower for H2ICE tech vs diesel.

Summer weather is occurring on top of a warmer background climate because of human-induced climate change.

The other week, Croydon High School's Astrogazers club tested a satellite - designed and built by the students - in flight for the first time at the FAAM Airborne Laboratory.

This was a key step in the their plan to be the first all-girls school in the world to send a satellite into space.

Clean air, warmer planet? New study co-authored by NCAS's Laura Wilcox shows East Asia’s air pollution clean-up may have lifted a “cooling mask,” revealing more GHG warming.

A reminder that we must cut emissions and pollution - for climate and health.

Success story - policies like ULEZ are seeing major reductions in vehicle emissions that contribute to poor air quality 👏

But more dominant sources are now showing up. We take a look at black carbon emitted by construction in our latest @ncas-uk.bsky.social research write-up:
The Southern Ocean absorbs a huge amount of atmospheric carbon thanks to its unique circulation, but stronger winds from ozone loss have reduced this uptake in recent decades.

As the ozone hole heals and greenhouse gases rise, future carbon absorption by the Southern Ocean remains uncertain 🤔
Wow - check out this first-of-its-kind cloud observatory (equipped with a robotic weather balloon launcher) in Antarctica! Amazing work by Neely and the TONE team 👏
A new cloud observatory has been built to enable science that’s never been done in Antarctica before. One of its goals: to equip the science community with tools to better understand the sea level rise and the Antarctic ice sheet.
