La Reducción de Daños se basa en principios de justicia y derechos humanos. Se centra en realizar cambios positivos y en trabajar directamente con las personas sin juzgarlas, coaccionarlas, discriminarlas ni exigirles que dejen de consumir drogas como condición para recibir apoyo

El término Reducción de Daños se refiere a las políticas, programas y prácticas orientadas a minimizar los impactos negativos del consumo de drogas y de las políticas públicas y leyes sobre drogas, tanto a nivel de salud, social y legal.

Los servicios de reducción de daños surgieron en la década de los 80 como respuesta a la crisis de VIH. Desde entonces, se ha desarrollado un amplio rango de estrategias para minimizar los impactos negativos asociados al uso de drogas.

🤓The lesson? Harm reduction and health strategies are much more cost-effective, and that’s where governments and donors should be investing their funds.

💸In 2024, over 205,000 people were incarcerated for drug-related offences, at a cost of at least USD 7.9 million per month.

Despite these results, in 2017, new mayor João Doria replaced this programme with police raids and other repressive measures. Many participants lost their homes, and some were transferred to different places or facilities.

📆After 2 years of operating, 84% were receiving health treatments, 52% regained contact with their families, 88% of participants reduced consumption of crack cocaine, and 72% had found a job.

It offered daily meals, assistance with housing, healthcare and a range of traditional harm reduction services for example safer smoking kits , amongst other things. 🥪🩺🚑

The result? The number of people incarcerated for drug-related offences tripled. ⛓️
In São Paulo, authorities tried a new approach: De Braços Abertos programme.

☀️Story time on why harm reduction works and has a positive impact on people’s lives. 
This story happens in Brazil 🇧🇷, which has the third largest prison population in the world. In 2006, a new law was enacted which allowed prison sentences for possessing small amounts of drugs.
