Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

The queen-card bird looking satisfied and leaning against a door, propping their belly up against the wall with one thigh and resting a hand on it for good measure. They're holding an ace (rescue) card and 9 (weapon) card. They're wearing the sword and the rope depicted in the ace card trails from their mouth to the arm they're holding against the door. There's a status heart off to the side of their belly showing the eel is at full health.

Meanwhile, the ferret character is depicted having thrashed three high-power enemy cards with the strongest weapon and buff available, looking maniacal as they stare down the weakest enemy in the game, who simply shrugs and goes 'Welp'.

Every detail on this guy was an absolute treat to construct. From his very unique eyes to his fluffy hair, we enjoyed it all!
