Watson and Skinner were named after the behaviourist psychologists.
Sometimes, though, Watson thinks John Watson would be a more suitable namesake for a writer's cat. Here he is channelling Dr Watson's interest in other someone else's case.

yellow birds of autumn

Delighted that my poem “I dream of my mother” placed third in the NAWG 2025 competition.

The abutilon in the photo was grown from a cutting taken from one my mother grew. It is currently overwintering in the spare room where I’m staying. There may be another poem there.

Still got a long way to go to reach your writing goal?

Each day you keep at it takes you another step in the right direction…
Each rung on that ladder offers a clearer view of the outcome…

…just imagine how it's going to feel when you finally reach the top!

Ever wish there were a fountain where you could take your notebook down and just fill it up with ideas?

Take comfort in the fact that we all feel that way sometimes. Even Leonard Cohen said, "If I knew where the good songs came from I'd go there more often."

How anchored in fact should writing be?

The trick is to create something that is real enough to seem possible but novel enough to appeal to the reader.

Read my article: "Write what you know: balancing personal experience with universal appeal":

"You shall not pass"
Watson the White guards the threshold to the bedroom, denying all rest until a suitable number of words have been written or other progress has been made on writing projects.

Do you have an accountability partner for your writing?

This photo was taken long before phones with cameras, so I doubt the mural still exists.

I pitched an article on Madrid street art and used the fee to buy a digital camera so I could complete the project. One of my first successes at selling before I'd actually written anything!

Writing is all about communicating.
Are you on the same wavelength as your audience?

Not everyone is going to want to read what you write, but the better you can define your ideal reader, the better you'll be able to write in a way that they'll engage with and relate to.

The ideal reader can be an elusive creature, but it’s definitely worth trying to identify them so you can speak to them directly and tell your story or express your intended message in a way that they will engage with and appreciate.

Does the end of your writing project seem far, far off in the distance, like the end of this fence?

Note how every fifth finial of this fence is highlighted in gold.

Setting small milestone goals to celebrate along the writing journey may make it easier to keep motivated.

The flowers in this "Roses & Castles" style art piece are painted with only a few brush strokes. Nothing else is needed.

How much descriptive detail do you go into in your writing? Could you cut a lot more and make just as much impact?

Have you noticed how films use a distinct colour palette to set the mood?

Your book may be printed in black & white, but do you have that sense of colour for your story?

Colours change, of course: this landscape is usually olive green, but on this morning, it was grey-blue.

Nothing remains of the face of this tomb sculpture to show us who he was and we are free to imagine him as we choose.

Do you include clear features of your characters, or do you let your readers imagine them for themselves?

It’s tempting to think that someone else will organise the get-togethers, workshops, writers’ group meet-ups etc, and all we need to do is turn up.

Then we complain about the timing, the focus, the format, and how it doesn’t really work for us…

There is a solution, of course!

Writing isn't the most lucrative of professions, but it still requires specific tools and skills.

In fact, Liam Neeson's speech from Taken could have been written with writers in mind: "I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills".

It's great to get positive comments, reviews & reactions to your writing.

I'm pretty sure, though, that Skinner's look of adoration is not triggered by my writing skills. I suspect she just wants another treat.

What nice things have people said about your writing?

I really like this photo as I actually got the focus right and managed to lose everything that didn't matter in the background.

Focus matters in writing: if you put too much emphasis on the background characters and setting, you risk boring, distracting or confusing your reader.

Reading a well-written book is an effortless experience, but readers don't see the effort & technicalities that led to that result.

I find machinery fascinating. Maybe that's why my focus is as much on the craft of writing & book design as it is on producing my own masterpiece.

This archway is a liminal space between a noisy 21st century street and the green bordered path that leads to an ancient castle.

Many books feature doorways, windows and portals into other worlds.

Are you writing in that genre? What does your "gateway" look like?

Everyone has an opinion. Not all opinions are equal.

Don't just assume the first feedback you get on your writing – whether it's criticism or a rave review – is an ultimate Truth.

Consider the source of all comments, the experience and the agenda of whoever they come from.

Straight from the horse's mouth...

As writers, I know we're trying to avoid worn out clichés, but this photo makes me want to take the bit between my teeth and start to talk about living in a one-horse town. It's certainly the only horse that regularly parks on the pavement.

Watson and Skinner say they don't think it's enough simply to be writer's cats. They feel they should have hobbies of their own, so have taken up birdwatching.

What are your hobbies? Do they distract you from you writing?
Or is your writing just a hobby?

The bougainvillea is an impressive marketer. Its tiny flowers would pass unnoticed if it weren't for the joyful visual noise of the coloured bracts.

How do you publicise your writing?
And is it like the bougainvillea, the kind of publicity that provides pleasure to the audience?
