On this date in 1986 the Red Sox defeated the Angels 10-4, and evened up the ALCS 3 games apiece. “Oil Can” Boyd pitched 7 innings giving up 3 runs for the win, and Spike Owen led the Offense going 4-4, with a Triple and 2 RBI’s. For the Postseason Owen hit .429 in the ALCS and .300 in the WS.

Why should anyone read the story of some unknown woman written by some unknown writer? A little attempt to answer that question.

Has anyone written a history of art in the NFL? I'm curious about the changes in logos and marketing over time. And when did painting the field start? Are the field painters unionized? Is it now automated like a stamp? I would like to read this

Excited to have a new piece in the Chronicle of Higher Ed (@chronicle.com). I’ve been in so many exchanges with people who’ve never heard anything happy about university presses. So I wrote an essay to share with them.

The focus on efficiency and innovation misses the point: We are producing fabulous books.

Bound book day for THE INSIDER! And what a beautiful object the fine people at Penguin Press have produced. I could not be happier with it, or with them.

Pub date is November 4th -- oh boy, or maybe shudder.

“If one cared to include the dozens or even hundreds of home runs Babe Ruth clouted in exhibition games, his total might approach a thousand homers. Some of his barnstorming drives were as colorful, or as romantic, as his tabulated shots.”

Everything is terrible right now in general, but in personal good news, my book has a cover and I'm so excited to share it!!!

Selling Out Santa is about Hollywood's manipulation of the Christmas holiday for socially conservative ends in the early Cold War 🗃️

A book cover from De Gruyter. A faded American flag's red and white stripes sets the background. In the foreground are three Christmas baubles: a darker red ball is in front coming in from the left, a white ball is behind it, and a light navy blue ball hangs behind that. White text reads the title: Selling out Santa Hollywood Christmas Films in the Age of McCarthy. On the blue ball white text reads Vaughn Joy and the series name pop culture in context
