Even though discourse about the “worthy immigrant” (compare to the non non nons in CJ policy) makes me uneasy, this is an important data point
NEW data I've received: Just 5% of people detained by ICE since October 1 have had violent criminal convictions, 3/4 had no criminal convictions at all. Most "criminals" had immigration, traffic, and vice offenses. Not the "worst of the worst"...

Corporate propaganda masquerading as journalism - if you subscribe to Broadband Breakfast, please cancel your subscription!
Ethical journalism demands independence — especially from the industries it covers.

By teaming up with Securus on a "correctional telecom" event — a company that profits from prison phone + video calls — Broadband Breakfast is platforming industry interests while silencing those most affected.

Oregon v Trump trial coverage, day 1. I've never heard of a PPS officer testifying to excessive use of force. Also, amazing that ICE actually hit a cop with munitions. A new flavor of lawlessness.

Two gay cultural phenomena that never cease to slay me: (1) the unspeakable beauty of Dykes on Bikes leading a pride parade; (2) the hushed reverence that descends on a gay bar when the video of Madonna’s “Vogue” comes on.

Hard to believe Kavanaugh's initial justification for the Kavanaugh Stop was made in good faith. Surely he knew he was describing a world that doesn't exist.

But it's truly infuriating to know he will suffer ZERO consequences, and SCOTUS admit ZERO error, despite such CLEAR evidence of mistake.

Same here
For as long as I can remember, I anxiously awaited the first Monday in October, as the highest court in the land would take on significant issues of the day. With sober reverence for the responsibility and the lives they knew were affected.

And this year, I await it with dread.

Pro tip: if you want to effectively use a particular position as a negotiating tactic, do not publicly call it a “negotiating tactic.”

One day after the Supreme Court lifted the ban on racial profiling, federal agents swarmed a car in Van Nuys.

Four masked agents with guns drawn yanked people out, slammed them to the ground, and pointed a weapon at a pregnant woman.

There is no justification for this. None.

The Court has obviously been issuing problematic opinions for its entire existence, but it’s remarkable how quickly its fundamental legitimacy has evaporated in the last ~10 years.
"Harvard can't use race as a factor in admissions, but ICE can use race as a factor in detentions" is a retrenchment essentially to a pre-Civil War understanding of the Constitution. It's vanishingly few steps removed from "Latinos have no rights which the white man is bound to respect."

Hard to take seriously the red-white-and-blue rhetoric of freedom on a 4th of July where the US president has cut off aid to a democracy fighting for its independence against ferocious attack by a foreign tyrant.

Indeed. ICE detention has always been a human rights nightmare. Now it will continue as such, on a much larger scale and with the explicit blessing of the President.
The same conservatives who, just a few years ago, were conspiracy-mongering about "FEMA camps" where the federal government would "disappear" people, now support MAGA camps where the federal government is disappearing people.
