This is like discounting Cooley and Tukey’s discovery of the FFT algorithm because Gauss and Fourier did it first. It is not uncommon for solutions to unsolved math problems to be buried in the literature. Unless the prior works explicitly stated they solved an Erdos problem, it’s legit IMO.

In general, I hate the way that infosec crimes are of the “find me the man and I’ll find the crime” flavor. Really leads to so many bad outcomes (see Marcus Hutchins for an infamous one). But when it comes to Bolton, the ends justify the means. Like Ceaușescu’s sham trial, it was well-earned.
