I am in my feelings today fam, what can I say?
This thing where everything has to be great in the end, evil gets kicked in, world is super, love is redeemed, health restored; that’s fine to want, but that’s not how things are or ever will be, there’s always going to be SOMETHING, & the comfort we have is in the nice stuff. So idk, fucking hell
in a vast galaxy of an universe so infinite your little monkey brain cannot conceive of the ocean of time & space you teeter on the edge of. So have your damn silly stories or whatever, you’re allowed to like things.
That’s not a bad thing, it’s a human thing. We hold back the shit with stories & jokes & games & making stuff. This is kind of what I mean when I say look, if you really think about it you’re a brief thing hanging on to the crust of molten oblate spheroid hurtling through space around a yellow dwarf
delight are important precisely because are that against a world where we feel small, and powerless. That instinct to say “I am ashamed of my silly little hobbies when the world is literally ON FIRE” is what keeps us from using them as places where we can feel comfort, joy, community & connection
[spoilers] This is my argument about ‘The Rose Field’ & the number of people saying “I hated the ending, it sucked, I already know the world is like this.” (Sorry, I looked at Reddit) The ending of The Rose Field is not “HURRAH, EVIL IS VANQUISHED, BUNS FOR TEA!” It’s that things that comfort &
I write middle-grade whodunnits, so you might want to dismiss my opinion out of hand. But I think cosy games/crime sometimes miss the fact that blankets are only cosy when it's cold outside. A world without conflict / a story without stakes isn't cosy, it's just safe.
We need to talk about the cozyfication of games because it’s a serious disease, possibly as bad as the edgyfication of the 90s and the grittyfication of the 00s.
It’s not for some guy who’s good at diving to validate you. You don’t need it. Abracadabra, I create as I speak. Go forth, make shit
I will say this with my last breath: Whenever you make something, even if it’s wonky; or grow a seed; or dance; or walk just to see what your city looks like, or sing even though you’re flatter than a board; you are at your most free, your most human. You’re matter briefly made conscious, & glorious
I watch ppl on the Sewing Bee say so often “I believe I’m good enough now,” NONONONONONO you were always good enough. Look at what you do! What you make! The joy it gives! Fucking hell YOU’RE PERFECT
Just let ppl do their silly little hobbies that give them joy without turning it all into monetising eyeballs and judging it for content. Make stuff in the scraps of time capitalism affords you and make it shit, because it’s a process not a competition damn it damn it fucking damn it
Arghurghfrghblerg Tom Daley has a competitive knitting show on channel 4. Stop it, stop it now, make it stop damn damn damn

makes me weep to think of the gifts robbed from us because unaffordable housing has made it difficult for people to pursue their passions and hobbies
Or, culture, art is not a special behaviour of a few, it’s not a cherry on the cake of humanity. It IS humanity. It’s gatekept, and hoarded, weighed and valued, but its essence is in belonging to all of us without any need for it to be a source of capital.
I just finished The Rose Field, & one thought occurs to me: the social model of disability follows that it is only the shape of the world we build that determines what is disability & what isn’t. Is the world we live in human shaped? Does it nurture things humans need to be human? Or something else?
London managed to look like the perfect autumn day today: dirt red brick, dark academia flavoured buildings over embellished with black ironwork; dead leaf filled gusts of wind; icy blue skies with dirty white clouds; the smell of bonfires and cold; the tube rocking us to sleep as we go home
I don’t know what it is about today, but it feels like a ‘bolognese for dinner’ kind of day. Or maybe soup…?
that it’s not necessary to blend in perfectly or insist on accommodating our needs when we experience others. We can see that we can be curious, interested and take pleasure in what’s around us.
It also runs deeply contrary to how UK ppl are stereotyped into acting when experiencing other cultures: The suspicion, the lack of language skills, the constant insistence on familiar things (tea, chips, pubs, fat pillows, etc.) I hope we realise the things in our culture worth celebrating teach us
Not to be all sparkly handwriting font on a pink background instagram post about this, but joy, expressing joy & enjoyment, is genuinely refreshing to souls jaded by the 24hr news/content cycle dumping sh*t in our brains. I think that’s why we love this man so much- unfettered joy is a balm
The legend that is the Japanese Ambassador to the UK enjoying a bowl of Scouse in Liverpool
GONNA KILL SOME M’FING ALIENS YEAH!; anyone else would have made a dumb lunk of a film where big robots smash baddies, but instead you get PTSD guy finds soulmate, world has problems, wonky science has consequences- I mean, popcorn filmmaking was never so good
He made Pacific Rim, of course he does. He made Idris Elba into a Shakespearean lead; Put Burn Gorman & Clifton Collins on as perfect side characters; Managed to write a love story with no physical contact but a forehead bump of love; Charlie Day is excellent; the story isn’t all AMERICA! F’YEAH!
Us: For the love of god, STOP remaking everything, make something ORIGINAL for fuck’s sake!! Remake privileges REVOKED

Guillermo del Toro: *walking out of universal with 40 monsters stuffed under his trenchcoat*

“Being RESPONSIBLE for YOUR ACTIONS? In this economy? NEVER!”
FR, I mean- what is this saying? “Oh lads, you just can’t help yourselves! Don’t you worry, no need to engage your beastly brains or use some of those higher functions eh? You just go back to grunting and hitting things with bones, you silly sausages!”
