NEW by @benquinn75.bsky.social with some minor help from me*: Reform said last week they had saved £331m at councils they run, but they have yet to produce a list showing how, and what information they have given is both £260m short and not 100% convincing.

Reform UK claim to have saved £331m at English councils – but do the numbers stack up?
Experts say councils face limits on cuts as Reform’s savings on IT deals, office moves and EV projects are disputed

So much of our infrastructure, planning, environmental, and road safety measures seem to be based around politicians' fear of slightly inconveniencing easily-angered motorists. Pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users are barely considered in their calculations.

Labour, like the Tories is no friend of active travel.
They like cars. It's grim.
Whilst the UK government is reported to be planning to cap the Cycle to Work Scheme, the Dutch government commits €1 billion to cycling infrastructure to connect new homes.

Hugely disappointing, with world now on track to yet more heating & chaos, & poorest hit first & hardest. This process needs radically rethinking - meantime it’s vital that the Brazil-led coalition of the willing urgently delivers on plans to leave fossil fuels in the ground #COP30

Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

Last year, I did a (poor) recording of a song I wrote about naked cycling. This summer, Col & Sadie (@freewilders.bsky.social) gave me the massive honour of singing it as part of their handfasting. I've now recorded a new, extended, better? version. Listen here:

This podcast contains nothing that we (I) haven't already repeated ad nauseum to our council in the Active Travel Forum, but it is said in a way that really brings home how utterly sh1t our urban environment is in Bolton. Link is in the post, and lasts about 15 minutes.

YX69NTD. Annoyed that I didn't get round to submitting this one to @lancspolice.bsky.social . Overtaking too close, at speed, over a double white line, forcing an oncoming driver to swerve onto the verge. Also a repeat offender (2nd clip) - warning letter sent by @gmpolice.bsky.social back in May.

MA63JFU. Warning letter from @gmpolice.bsky.social for this one. Given the huge amount of space available in the lane, I can only conclude that this was a deliberate close pass. If so, the warning letter is not educational, because the driver already knows they are doing wrong. 1/2

This is absolutely bizarre. These LTNs, which from the start always had majority local support, & which were paid for by TfL, are now uncontroversial in practice. Removal of £2million OBGR improvements would be an unprecedented act of social vandalism & financial waste. Shameful stuff.
