Very excited to say this is what I've been working on with @eteogreg.bsky.social over the past year!

We've got some fantastic articles lined up for you, and I can't wait to share them.
Launching today, Eteo Archetypes is a website and newsletter project exploring unsung aspects of video game design.

Each month will see a theme examined through the lens of three different games, starting with 'Flying Cities'.

After traveling between continents, moving house, starting a new job and launching a website in the space of one week, my body has finally conked out lol

Massive thanks to @jumpovertheage.com for this cracking piece on Skies of Arcadia. A brilliant way to kick things off for Archetypes, I think, and particularly topical given it was the game's 25th anniversary recently!
Our first Archetypes article is by game designer Gareth Damian Martin, examining how the architecture of Skies of Arcadia draws the player's gaze towards azure skies.

The Blue-Sky Optimism of Skies of Arcadia
A view towards the horizon is baked into the very foundations of Skies of Arcadia, with architecture that draws the eye towards azure skies.

Love it when I'm able to fall asleep on the bus, makes a 2-hour journey feel like 5 minutes. A real-life time skip

Is there a Bluesky list of all the new independent games media websites that have launched over the last couple of years?

(I'd quite like a way to keep up with their output so it doesn't get lost in the feed)

Stumbled across a couple of Fantano music crit videos and I'm baffled he gets the views he does. Barely any illuminating music analysis, and a weird focus on women having to act as pure/perfect mothers, or not being allowed to take career breaks to have kids. Is this the best we have?

Interviewed an audio director recently who told me how an *iconic* character catchphrase came from the voice actor improvising in the booth.

Using AI voices robs you of the chance for spontaneous, funny, ad-libbed performances that could help define your game.
If your game has voice acting, then working with the voice actors is half of your writing process. It's not complete until you've heard it interpreted and reimagined by a voice actor. And they always reimagine it in ways that elevate the writing, in ways you never would have imagined yourself.

Big fan of reviewers calling out the use of Gen AI in games, I'd hate to see low-effort slop become normalised and accepted as 'just part of development'
