These three are part of a research group spanning many decades dedicated to cataloguing each women's house in the Cistercian order. Right now, they're working on a wiki - and we can't wait to see it go live!

Yesterday, the Medieval Research Group had the chance to listen to Halle Martin (PhD student of history), Marianne Swierenga (associate professor, cataloguing and metadata librarian), and Benwin George (MS student of computer science) discuss their work in the Cistercian Women's Houses project.

Last night, we had the distinct honour of greeting Dr. Thomas E. Burman from the University of Notre Dame for his lecture.
We had a lovely time listening to a great scholar - thank you, Dr. Burman!

As the Plague of Autumn takes many of our members, we look to the joyful. Who's your companion in these troubled times?

Where in the world are the Goliards?!
This weekend, a few members of our team made it out to the Michigan Renaissance Festival! Weapons were wielded, games were played, and horses were petted - all essential parts of the medieval experience, of course.

If it sounds familiar, it's because it is: the equinox is celebrated around the Northern Hemisphere in traditions like Canadian and American Thanksgiving, pagan Mabon, and German Oktoberfest.

Have a bountiful harvest and keep your lanterns lit! 🧵

Medieval traditions varied from village to village - sometimes even household to household! - but all celebrated the spirit of the harvest with games, drinks, music, and dancing.

In Old English, this period of celebration is called hærfest. This is the "last hurrah" when farmers prepare for the winter. They know how well their crops did, how well-fed their animals were, and whether their families will last through the winter.

Just as they celebrated the solstices - the longest day and night - medieval people honoured the equinoxes, when the day and night are split evenly. 🧵

Big fan of Beneventan myself, but Merovingian is a close second. Having two favourites makes me less of a nerd it's just science

Committing adultery is surprisingly easy! What could possibly go wrong?

Excerpts come from The Miller's Tale by Chaucer; Powerpoint is by our own Emily (thank you!).
