Today's featured #longreads 1/2: There are no pure cultures by @berytia.bsky.social

“This tale of globalisation is the most successful scare story of our times. And like all scare stories, it stimulates our fear of an overwhelming unknown.

But it’s all an illusion. There is no new global world.”

James Watson made some tremendous contributions to science, and expressed many grotesque views, which were racist, sexist and ignorant. These are all well documented.

Science writer @philipcball.bsky.social calls nanotech an ‘oneiric technology’: a technology that quite probably cannot exist, but fulfils a deep-rooted dream, or a nightmare, or both. Read his Essay here:

Our research associate Luke Kemp on societal collapse in human history, with insights from his book Goliath’s Curse 👇
Popular perceptions of past empires focus on their great artwork and monumental achievements. But in recent years, many historians have taken a different approach, asking: what was it like as an ordinary person to live through these imperial collapses?
The great myth of empire collapse | Aeon Essays
Societal downfalls loom large in history and popular culture but, for the 99 per cent, collapse often had its upsides

A near-encounter with Mario Biagioli when I was a student was big for me. He heard I had given a talk at Harvard and asked me to send it to him; he then sent it on to Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, and it became my first publication. Such generosity, from a scholar I had never met.
