In interview, actor Patrick MacNee whose series “The Avengers” was similarly impacted..

The strike led to the departure of his co-star Ian Hendry who was persuaded by offers of film work.

.. inferred that Probation Officer may have, in some way, been partly responsible for the strike action.. 🤷‍♀️

Probation Officer, in common with many programmes of the period was impacted by the 1961-62 Equity strike.

The future of many programmes became untenable.

A change of lead actor was suggested by the press in May 1962 following unsuccessful contract negotiations.

However, this came to nothing.

When early episodes aired, concerns were raised by the National Association of Probation Officers - who disassociated itself from the programme.

Late, in 1959 a Home Office spokesperson stated future programmes would be vetted by the Principal Probation Officer for Inner London before broadcast..

However, it was based on true life stories researched by creator Julian Bond.

It was also the first one hour drama to air on the fledgling ITV network.
