Did the hairdresser on Mr Burton think it was set in the 1970s?!

Delighted to get the chance to watch #MrBurton on BBC1. I wasn’t familiar with Philip B until I was doing my Ella Logan research & discovered that he rec’d her for the part in the doomed 1964 Broadway show Kelly - from which her character was written out by the re-writing team, led by Mel Brooks!

Meet Mary Gordon - single mother & proud Scot who became one of Hollywood’s best-loved character actresses in the 1930s and was adored by the likes of James Cagney, Katharine Hepburn & John Ford. Thanks to the @sundaypost.com for letting me tell her story & giving her a great spread! #MaryGordon

@kermodemovie.bsky.social Hi Mark, just been listening to your Screen Shot on Frankenstein and thought you might enjoy my story about my great-granny’s cousin who was tossed down the well by the Monster at the start of Bride of Frankenstein! She really deserves to be better known …

I'm just a lowly art historian, but in moments like these I always think back to one early sign of Trump's wanton, pointless destructiveness: his demolition of the priceless & irreplaceable Art Deco relief sculptures on facade of the Bonwit Teller building, which he tore down to build Trump Tower

Nice one, BBC News 🙄🙄.

The thing I remember best about #TheAndersonTapes is that it gave me a chance to see how Margaret Hamilton (AKA The Wicked Witch of the West) looked 30+ years after The Wizard of Oz! @TalkingPicsTV , 9.45pm

I hope one of the terrestrial TV channels will organise a Robert Redford retrospective; what a movie season that would be.

Pure unadulterated, swinging JOY!
If you need to rewatch the terrific Ellington number Old Man Blues from the Parky show currently screening - here it is …

Bloody hell, the BBC Radio Scotland news at 4pm actually listed Michelle McManus getting a new job as one of its headlines 😆.
I suppose it would be good news for Radio Scotland listeners if it meant there was less chance of accidentally hearing her “interviewing” someone on the radio …

In a sentimental mood so am revisiting what I consider my greatest ever YouTube find.

It has everything: a legendary singer, a legendary pianist & two movie legends. And the mutual affection is utterly irresistible and terribly moving.

Does nobody proofread subtitles (part 3027)?
I’m revisiting The Thick of It and this is what the subtitles say when Peter Mannion refers to Malcolm Tucker as “the Gorbals Goerring” 🙄🤣!

On this day, 40 years ago, I was introduced to what is still one of my favourite TV series - and it led me to what is still my favourite series of books ... EF Benson's glorious #MappandLucia series, dramatised by @channel4tv.bsky.social and with the peerless cast of McEwan, Scales & Hawthorne.

Cheering myself up in the company of the ever delightful Damon Runyon .. As if his Broadway stories weren't wonderful enough, these editions feature sublime illustrations by Nicolas Bentley - the icing on an already delicious cake 👌.

In 1897, the Parisian-born artist Alfred Sisley took his final trip to his ancestral home of Britain, when he married his long-term partner Eugenie Lescouzec after a 30-year engagement. They travelled along the Welsh coast to Langland Bay where this work was painted.

Martin Compston's new #AmazonPrime Glasgow-set series Fear may be entertaining on the spot-the-location front but the dialogue .. 🙄 .. dear, oh dear.
"What's he doin', lickin' your vanilla slice?" was a LOL moment 😆 ..

Mae Swasey in The Model and the Marriage Broker (1951) ... Thelma in a leading role!

#ThelmaRitterDay
Celebrating Thelma Ritter, born on today's date in 1902. I love everything I've ever seen her in -- if you could name only one favorite Thelma Ritter character, who would you name today?

I'd pick Ellen McNulty from The Mating Season (1951).

The drawback to @scotlandspeople.bsky.social & Ancestry being available online is that my inner Miss Marple seems to kick in around midnight, when I disappear down genealogy rabbit holes only to emerge around 3am too wired to sleep. Paying the price this morning for my latest investigation! 🤪😵‍💫😩

"You can return it if you don't like it - but you can't return it if you haven't got it!" 🤣🤣 Eh?!
Yes, I just watched 30 seconds of the TJC shopping channel as they try to persuade viewers to part with £1800 so they can then return the garish pink diamond ring they're touting.

I may not have been able to make the 4pm screening of Dead Reckoning at the GFT today but I reckon I should be excused as I am paying homage by wearing my latest beret ... 😉. Sadly, I look like Lizabeth Scott's mother rather than her twin 😓.

On the anniversary of the sublime Veronica Lake's birth, here's my piece on her, from two years ago ...
Fave compliment I ever received was from a former editor who referred to me as "The Veronica Lake of Byres Road". (He was from Edinburgh; I'm a southsider 😉!)

Why ‘brainless blonde sexpot’ Veronica Lake was too good for Hollywood
