Inktober Day 10 - Sweep

Tried to emulate @artofsully.bsky.social's work since their character work is awesome and I've been meaning to give it a try for a while. Also a big Kiki's Delivery Service lover 🧹

Grave of the Fireflies has had huge critical acclaim, often being regarded as one of the all-time best animated films, and best WWII films. The intense subject matter also makes it stand out among Studio Ghibli's films, earning it a complex reputation as a brilliant but difficult work. [11/11]
Takahata was interested in using non-traditional animation methods on Grave of the Fireflies, but time constraints stood in the way. He was notorious for falling behind deadlines, and for some of his later films, he would ultimately spend a long time working on more experimental approaches. [10/11]
Other returning crew members included composer Mamiya Michio. He had previously provided soundtracks for Horus, Prince of the Sun (太陽の王子 ホルスの大冒険), Gauche the Cellist (セロ弾きのゴーシュ) and Takahata's documentary The Story of Yanagawa's Canals (柳川堀割物語). [9/11]
Takahata himself didn't draw or animate, but he specially chose team members with the skills he was looking for. Kondo Yoshifumi, who was character designer and animation director on Takahata's Anne of Green Gables (赤毛のアン), took up the same roles again on Grave of the Fireflies. [8/11]
A reason Takahata decided it was worth adapting Grave of the Fireflies was that Seita's stubborn attitude reminded him of children in the prosperous 1980s. Indeed, he stressed that this was the point of the film, rather than any anti-war message - despite his personal opposition to war. [7/11]
Takahata followed the original story closely in his adaptation, including details like the characters' local dialect. One significant change, though, was the addition of a framing device where Seita and Setsuko are shown from the start as ghosts looking back on the events. [6/11]
Nosaka wrote the novella to deal with his memories of surviving the war while his little sister died. He based the character of Seita on himself, but said that Seita is more caring than he had been. He described Grave of the Fireflies as a "double suicide" story. [5/11]
Other Ghibli films at the time were published by parent company Tokuma Shoten, but because Totoro was being produced at the same time, Grave of the Fireflies was funded by Shinchosha, publishers of the original book. This would cause complications for rights deals later. [4/11]
Grave of the Fireflies is an adaptation of a 1967 semi-autobiographical novella by Nosaka Akiyuki. Having experienced WWII bombings first-hand as a child, Nosaka belonged to the "yakeato generation", which also included big names like manga trailblazer Tezuka Osamu. [3/11]
The story takes place during the last months of the Second World War, following two orphaned siblings living in and around Kobe, one of the targets of fire bombing. Facing food shortages and coming into conflict with the aunt who takes them in, they struggle in vain for survival. [2/11]
This week's #GhibliSpotlight thread focuses on Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓), the first Ghibli feature film to be directed by Takahata Isao. It was first released in cinemas on 16 April 1988, as part of a double feature alongside Miyazaki's My Neighbour Totoro. 🧵 [1/11]
