Let’s stop pretending: A certification that doesn’t guarantee 100% certified product is nothing but a logo. And that’s exactly the problem with @SustainableEel’s SEG certification.

Everyone keeps asking: “Why hasn’t ISEAL explained SEG’s suspension?”
Simple:
ISEAL only goes quiet when the failures are serious enough to shake the system.

The Sustainable Eel Group claims to champion eel conservation — but guess who they actually listen to? Fishing lobbyists, not scientists.
Why save wild eels when you can keep the consumption conveyor belt humming?

Contradiction #1:
SEG says it wants to “save the European eel”…
…but then fights against CITES Appendix I, the highest protection level.
If the eel is dying, why block the protection?
Who benefits from keeping trade open?

Why is the Sustainable Eel Group (SEG) fighting so hard against putting the European eel on CITES Appendix I?
Appendix I = NO international trade.
If the eel is critically endangered, why defend the trade?
Who are they really protecting?

SEG suspended by ISEAL.
This isn’t a warning it’s a full credibility collapse. ISEAL almost never suspends a member, and there’s no real precedent for a suspended standard being fully reinstated. This is a massive red flag

SEG suspended by ISEAL and here’s the kicker: no other sustainability standard has ever been suspended and fully reinstated. SEG is blazing new ground… with no precedent. Red flag for anyone trusting their certification.

Eel farms might sound sustainable — like they raise young eels just like other aquaculture. But SEG-certified farms don’t work that way. They rely entirely on taking young eels from the wild, not breeding them. That’s the real starting point.

SEG (Sustainable Eel Group) markets European eel as “sustainable.” Reality: every eel eaten, even farmed, stops millions of potential offspring from ever spawning.

Europe restocks tens of millions of baby eels every year.
Sounds impressive, right?
But here’s the real picture when you compare restocking numbers to the number of adult eels killed for consumption.
Spoiler: the math is brutal

Let’s be clear: DUPAN funds SEG.
SEG is the group that hands out the “sustainable eel” stamp.
So the industry financially supports the body that certifies its own operations. That’s not independence that’s influence.

Why is Dupan constantly applauding SEG, giving them credit, and promoting them nonstop on social media? You’re celebrating an organisation that is currently suspended by ISEAL
Suspended means not compliant. What exactly is there to applaud?

A certificate for SAS Estuaires gets published… then QUIETLY ALTERED WITHIN HOURS.
This isn’t transparency — it’s a giant red flag. 🧵👇

SEG's 'conditional pass' for that French eel fishery: Issued March 2022, audit due Dec 2022... still pending in 2025. That's not sustainable fishing—that's sustainable “bureaucracy”! Congrats on outlasting the eels themselves. @eelgroup @ISEAL_Alliance @DefraGovUK
