… Nevada. I can’t understand the details of all of these stories (I’m not a geologist!) but I understand some of the themes. One is the constant wearing down and eroding of the highest peaks, a process that eventually transports rocks far from their source. And when this happens…

Rock Isle Lake can be seen to the left. I made this photograph from a viewing platform at the Sunshine Meadows area of Banff National Park. I took a gondola up the Sunshine Village and hiked from there. The photo was taken with a Nikon and a 300mm lens.

Normal people stay away from that location when the tule fog arrives, but that’s my cue to go there! I love photographing in foggy conditions.

“Sandhill Cranes, Tule Fog” — A flock of lesser sandhill cranes in a wetland pond on a foggy winter morning.

Someone said it is national migratory bird day of some such thing, so here is a photograph of some of my favorite birds.

…conditions. (One strategy is to head for more sheltered east side valleys and canyons with larger trees.)

What about later next week? Fall-color aspens and snow can be beautiful, but it is getting later in the season and your trip may be longer if Sonora, Ebbetts and Tioga Passes close.

That happens, and while it takes down a lot of peak-color leaves, the trees that “aren’t there quite yet” typically come into form a few days later and things can look great once again.

But now there’s a new wrinkle. Weather forecasters have now raised a winter storm watch…

But there was a little problem. Late on Wednesday very strong winds developed, taking down a lot of the peak color leaves in many places. I left late Thursday, but I understand that the winds continued…

Some of you may know that I have a bit of history photographing fall color (mostly aspens) in the eastern Sierra Nevada. I think this may turn out to be a bit of a tricky season for catching the fall color.

I was up there last week…
