Hello Horatio

A large Georgian-style panelled window shows a blue sky, wispy clouds and, in the lower center panel, the statue of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson that stands atop of his column. The view from Muriel's Kitchen in the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

An oolitic limestone building featuring a 3 × 3 grid of tall, arched windows on its first through third floors. This rear entrance to a larger structure is set back from the street, and is preceded by steps in matching Bath stone. Through the glass panes we can see flights of stairs. The Old Walcot School from 1840 by James Wilson, converted to apartments in 2002. Guinea Lane, Bath, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Here's a poster that I designed for a concert on Thursday. If you're in or around Chicago, maybe you'd be interested …

#Music #Concert #Design #Posters #PosterDesign #Chicago #UChicago #RockefellerChapel
A layout for a poster promoting a classical music concert. In the centre of a plain orange background is a large stylised treble clef in white. Within the counter space of the symbol are three photographs: a sculpture of St Michael that appears over the doors of the venue, an interior shot with a choir in gowns being conducted, and a organist at work. The main heading reads "Rockefeller Chapel Choir Choral Evensong." Design by Gearóid Burke.

Escape

#BathUK #Architecture #GeorgianArchitecture #Photography
At the centre of a Palladian-style arcade of round arches, a dark passageway leads to an open gate—and another yellow, Bath stone building. A small tree and red flowers grow in a planter to the left. An off-white drainpipe is attached to the wall on the right. St John's Foundation, Chapel Court, Bath, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

A couple of customers and a dog at a table outside an independent café, early on a Sunday morning. The mid-terrace, three-storey Georgian building with a large glass shopfront has been painted terracotta orange in contrast to the grey and stone facades of its neighbours. In the sky above, grey rainclouds move in from the left. The Bridge, Frome, Somerset, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

An interior photograph centred on a a tall Gothic window with a cusped roundel at the top. The glass is obscured by blinds to block UV rays and therefore reduce the risk of fading and damage to the Roman artefacts in the room. This is Reading Museum, and display cabinets can be seen on either side of the image. Town Hall, Blagrave Street, Reading, Berkshire, UK. Constructed in 1872 to the designs of Alfred Waterhouse. Photo by Gearóid Burke. Through the fine mesh of a UV-blocking window blind we can see the top floors of a Georgian-style building with rectangular multi-panel windows and the neo-classical façade of another. Another shot from my trip to Frome a couple of weeks ago: a great gate on Paul Street.

#Frome #Gates #Doors #Metalwork #Sculpture #Photography
On a sloping pedestrian street, an entrance in an old stone wall is covered by a decorative double gate. Designed to resemble giant blades of grass or reeds, and made of green, vertical metal strips, tapering at the top, with some pieces bowing left and right, particularly along the bottom. The ground below is decorated with terracotta tiles, and weeds grow along the verge. Paul Street, Frome, Somerset, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

A (former) #ChurchOnSunday: Countess of Huntingdon’s Chapel, Bath.

#Stunday #BathUK #Architecture #GeorgianArchitecture #Museums #Signage #Photography
A monotone photograph of a rather grand looking building. It is set back from its neighbours, the sides of which can be seen to the left and right. Iron railings and neat, low hedges are seen in the foreground. The front facade features tall windows with ogee-arched heads and a battlemented roofline, both key features of the Gothic Revival style. This is Countess of Huntingdon’s Chapel. Selina Hastings, said Countess of Huntingdon, saw the social life in Bath as one of decadence and immorality, so she built a Chapel to spread her favoured flavour of Methodism. The chapel was last used for worship in 1981 and is now the Museum of Bath Architecture. The Paragon, Bath, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke. A monotone photograph of a large gatepost which has been carved to read "Formerly Countess of Huntingdon’s Chapel, A.D. 1765." The word "formerly" is in a smaller, lighter style than the rest of the words. The Paragon, Bath, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Broad St + Queen Victoria St, Reading, last Saturday.

Looking across a paved street with grey paving stones set in concentric circles. Pedestrians pass a junction with another street which is lined with ornate, redbrick Victorian buildings. Wet from a recent rainstorm, the road surface reflects the light. Broad Street (looking north to Queen Victoria Street), Reading, Berkshire, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Back alley with skybridge, Frome.

#BlueSkyArtShow #TheRoad #Frome #Somerset #Skybridge #Streetscape #StreetPhotography #Photography
A narrow alley behind old stone buildings. The macadamed road has multiple patches and weeds grow along the verge. A dark wooden skybridge with three small windows spans the laneway. Satellite dishes indicate that the buildings are still in use, with residential units above the ground level. In the distance, a curved, yellow stone building has a large ghost sign reading "York's Motor Works." Eagle Lane, Frome, Somerset, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Not mountains.

#UrbanGaze #HumansOfBluesky #Streetscape #Frome #MarketDay #Retail #Photography
Early on a Sunday morning, a street has been pedestrianised for market day and is lined with food and drink stalls. It's just before the official opening time, and there are few customers around. Two traders chat, a couple with a dog on a leash stand in the middle of the road, and two women are about to pass on the right. A mountain-like mass of dark grey clouds can be seen in the distance, soon to bring a downpour. The "Frome Independent" street market is held on the first Sunday of each month, March to December. Each event attracts an average of 10,000 people, though much less on this particular Sunday due to the weather. Frome, Somerset, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Phoenix Terrace

#Frome #Somerset #Streetscape #GeorgianArchitecture #Photography
A modest, mid-terrace, three-storey Georgian townhouse in an English market town. It is built on a slope, opens directly to a footpath and faces an iron railing. The facade's warm grey paint is elegantly faded, the yellow stone trim shows signs of age and pollution. The doors and window frames have been painted laurel green, and the windows (one per floor) reduce in size and complexity as they rise up the building (20 panes, 12 panes, 6 panes). Catherine Street, Frome, Somerset, UK. Photo by Gearóid Burke.

Every now and again our building looks pretty. Although they could do with cleaning the glass from time to time!
