I sort of trace it all the way back to the Neolithic. In any case the fall of societies and the advent of "civilization" created a Cerberus of nationality, religion, and economics. Most humans have been serfs or slaves since then. (Propaganda would have you believe otherwise).

M2 was the most fun thing I've ever used on a firing range.
The old M79 grenade launcher is a close second. M40 was a blast, also.

Modern America has two great passions.
Neither of them is learning.
We have progressed, in an irony as tragic as it is comic, to the point that so long as they can gamble and watch pro/college sports, men (in particular) are happy. Overt racism is simply a bonus.

But violence has two distinct forms: "Your" violence-not acceptable. "Our" (insert nation, religion, or corporation here) violence-acceptable and necessary.
Usually, the latter is in order to make progress. Which is to say, for someone to become richer.
