My book purchase in Portland for my flight back. I got it Powell's albeit the airport one. I'm half way through this gem of a book.
The Portland newspaper article I read in my hotel lobby this past week directly compared the inflatable animal protests to the Dada movement circa Workd War 1, and I now need to go down that rabbit hole. Anyone have a good link or two about that?
This was art by the bathrooms at the Campari classes at Portland Cocktail Week a few days ago. When I posted it to the unofficial cocktail week chat room, someone replied "I would order a bartender's choice from this man. He has seen some shit."
When I mentioned to one of my regulars who used to be in the industry that there were some folks angry that they did not win the competition last week, he replied "They should view it like one player Mario Cart where you are racing against a ghost of your last race, your former self."
Photos from my panel at Boston Rum Week 2025. The Anatomy of Rum Cocktails: Choices, Trends, and Culture in a Glass. Moderated by Garnett Philip and presented by Shannon Mustipher, Katie Stryjewski, and myself.
From recent experience, kind of annoying since I'm not sure if my management takes coins (they ignore quarters), so it's a question of whether it will remain in the till or be counted towards our paycheck in tips. I exchange them for bills, just in case, but they stay in my coin pocket for weeks.
Book 15 of 2025: The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific by J. Maarten Troost. I named a tropical cocktail this a few years ago, and I finally got to read this tale of two Americans trying to live on an atoll. www.amazon.com/Sex-Lives-Ca...

State of the liquor industry: Went to two events recently promising lunch that was closer to hors d'oeuvres than anything substantial. Invite-only brand events are pay-to-drink (albeit $3-4 cheaper than market) instead of free like in the old days.
Book 13 of 2025: Slow Drinks by Danny Childs. I heard Danny present on an online Campari Academy class, and I bought a signed copy directly from his website. www.amazon.com/Slow-Drinks-...

Book 12 of 2025: Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life as a Ramone by Marky Ramone. Writer Richard Herschlag does a good job of taking Marky’s stories and presenting them in a coherent way. Other benefit is that my copy has amusing notes and commentary from a punk rock fan! www.amazon.com/Punk-Rock-Bl...

Second one out on the wild!
I saw a riff on the Penicillin that included some Campari that reminded me of a drink I created on the fly at a guest bartending shift in Oaxaca that was a Ferrari (Fernet-Campari) instead of Scotch riff that I dubbed the Body Shop (a car fixer-upper): cocktailvirgin.blogspot.com/2023/02/body...

In response to Instagram insisting that I add music to my photo post to receive better distribution in their algorithm, I selected John Cage's 4'33" as my silent soundtrack.
4 packed cups of oregano turned into 12 ounces of oregano-peanut and 12 ounces of oregano-walnut pesto! There's more oregano to be harvested (but not in the freezer to store the end product).
Book 10 of 2025: Herbert Asbury’s The French Quarter. After enjoying his Barbary Coast tale of San Francisco, I embarked on this seedy telling of New Orleans’ history. www.amazon.com/French-Quart...
