Today is the feast of All Franciscan Saints, coinciding with the anniversary of approval of the Rule of the Friars Minor. It's one of the days I miss praying in Italian, for the 'svariata fioritura' of seraphic holiness in the collect and the 'phalanx of virgins' in the Benedictus antiphon.

While I had lunch I left on another table my reusable grocery bag from my favorite taco place in town, and this friar was going to take it.

Sometimes I wonder if some of these friars sought out a vow of obedience, perhaps unconsciously, precisely because they resent authority and need to be in conflict with it. Family of origin issues, that sort of thing.
