I often forgo elaborate backgrounds in favor of simple hatching, which does the trick pretty well.
So many of my strips feature nothing more than the characters, the dialogue, and said hatching. And I think I’m pretty happy with that. (And I think my readers are too!)

if you're one person making a comic by yourself, don't treat yourself like you should function on the same level as comics that have multiple people working on them. your backgrounds can be squiggles and colors.

Two. Obviously Erin, who's natural hair color is white, dyes her hair any color other than anything remotely pink (she hates that color and mostly associates it with Wendy).
The other is Aiya. Yeah, being dual-Polynesian, she's not a natural blonde, but black haired. It's an aesthetic for her.

Aiya is a pretty good cook, mostly cooking up her favorite Hawaiian dishes passed down from her mom as well as some Samoan dishes passed down to her from her dad's side of the family (of course most recipes involve fish).
